Whenever I would look back on my elementary years, the recurring image of a little boy walking in a slow to moderate pace always comes to my mind. He is such in that state not because of the enormous backpack filled with much stuff, nor because of the melancholic ambiance of walking alone every afternoon. But the main reason is, his mind runs faster, more than his feet can.
Those afternoons would eventually bring a lasting effect on me. Practical and economic reasons encouraged me to do the walking after classes, every afternoon, from our school to our house. Yet, it seems I had gained more. From the simplicity of those walks sprung far greater results.
Walking gave me an opportunity to have my moments of reflection. Since most of the time I would walk alone, there is plenty of time for introspection, for thinking things over, for reflecting on events which transpired during the whole day. Consequently, it is also the time for generating ideas, for formulating dreams, for evaluating myself and others especially those of proximate and immediate value to me. In this silence, amidst everyday’s sights and sounds, a simple haven was being made in my mind and heart.
Walking also gave me an opportunity to see not only myself but also the world around me, to observe what is happening in a different perspective. Due to the distance from our school to our house, I would pass by a wide variety of life’s situations, a glimpse on a slice of life. These are sights to behold! From the numerous vendors vying to catch your attention, to idle people spending their time doing nothing or from children playing around, to adults attending to daily chores – all became a source of learning for me. Literally, I took learning on the road.
Those times are precious to me. For those instances shaped my attitudes, my way of thinking and partly, me.
People may have taken the same roads every day, but what makes the difference? It s how you take it that counts.
This is not much of a starter for this new blog but this would give as a preview of what this blog would have – more of reflections of someone wandering around, searching for what he could find in his existence.
For more reflections, please view the Some Moments, Sem Moments page. Thank you!
i really like the simplicity of your article yet truthful. The story of your life and the bridge of your being. A walk to remember, for a lifetime
